Sunderland’s 2023/24 campaign came to a disappointing conclusion on Saturday as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
It was a season that started with much promise after the brilliant sixth-placed finish the Black Cats managed to achieve in their first campaign back in the Championship. Despite some persistent struggles in the final third Sunderland looked well placed to at least to push to repeat that feat, but the departure of Tony Mowbray began a spiral all the way down to 16th. It looks set to be a crucial summer at Sunderland as they prepare to name Michael Beale’s permanent successor. And what next for the playing squad? Here, we assess every player in the senior squad over the course of the season, rate their campaign and discuss what it means for the bid rebuild ahead…

21. BRADLEY DACK
Was brought in to add some experience to the squad and to add a goal threat. Despite an encouraging early goal against Southampton he was just never able to get going, his campaign badly impacted by a series of niggling injuries. A move that in the end just hasn’t worked out for anyone. Rating: 3.5/10 | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

22. ALEX PRITCHARD
Proved his worth having been close to an exit in the summer window, one of Sunderland’s best players in the winter period and their most consistently creative option in the number ten position. A contract wrangle was a sad way for an excellent spell on Wearside to come to an end - Birmingham have subsequently been relegated and Sunderland miss his quality in possession. Needs replacing this summer. Rating: 6.5/10 | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

23. ROMAINE MUNDLE
A player signed very much for the future and perhaps a little disappointing that he didn’t get a bit more game time over the last few weeks. Showed flashes of promise to build on in pre-season but hasn't yet looked ready to be a regular starter week in, week out. Rating: 5/10 | Ian Horrocks Photo: Ian Horrocks

24. ABDOULLAH BA
Had a solid first half to the season and deputised well when Patrick Roberts was first injured. Struggled to maintain that consistency but suffered from being shifted around the pitch again as unexpected turnover in the dugout saw Sunderland’s season unravel. Will likely be part of the squad next season but needs a settled role and position - and he then needs to find that consistency. One of too many players in the squad where there really are too many question marks heading into pre-season. Rating: 5/10 | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid
