In his exclusive discussion with our chief Sunderland AFC writer, Phil Smith, Methven offered a number of updates on the future of the club following their new investment from American consortium, FPP Sunderland. But what were the key points from his engaging interview? Scroll down and click through the pages to see what the club’s executive director had to say on a wide range of subjects – from January signings to Juan Sartori:
9. FPP's investment could lead to some fresh contacts for the Black Cats
“We are also really looking forward to having them as mentors, and to be introduced to their wider circle of contacts in the sports and entertainment worlds," said Methven. Photo: Frank Reid
10. Will Phil Parkinson be backed in January?
Methven claims that "there was always going to be support in January for changes as the manager sees fit" - regardless of the managerial changes and subsequent investment. Photo: FRANK REID
11. Methven offered his view on the sacking of Jack Ross
"The managerial situation was a judgement that the board made and there’s no point pretending it was a cut and dried judgement. Sometimes it’s clear to everyone that a manager has run out of road at a club, and I don’t think that’s the case with Jack. Jack did such an enormous amount of good work at the club, and he won’t be remembered as a failed manager here." Photo: FRANK REID
12. Why wasn't Phil Parkinson handed a short-term deal?
“It’s very important when you appoint a manager that you believe in that manager and demonstrate that," says Methven.
“If you give a manager a short-term deal, the clock is ticking straight away. It’s really important as a board that you make a decision and put your money where your mouth is. The recruitment process that went on was very, very thorough. Photo: Frank Reid
