Appearing on the BBC’s Match of the Day podcast with fellow ex-England stars Gary Linekar and Ian Wright, talk turned towards Shearer’s role in the iconic 1999 North East derby.

Sunderland triumphed 2-1, in what was a first win for the Black Cats at St James’s Park in a decade, with goals from Kevin Phillips and Nial Quinn cancelling out Kieron Dyer’s opener.

The theatre began before the kick-off when then-manager Ruud Gullit effectively dropped Alan Shearer by not recalling him from suspension.

That decision ultimately cost the Dutchman his job on Tyneside.

When asked about whether or not Shearer wanted his boyhood club to triumph after being left out of the side, Shearer jokingly replied: “I was a Sunderland fan that night, Gary!”
