Wright’s contract expires in the summer and so as it stands, it seems likely that the Australia international has played his last game for the Robins.

The 27-year-old has played over 80 times since joining the club in 2016, but has struggled for regular action this season.

Injury curtailed his progress and the arrival of Ashley Williams offered a further challenge.

A club statement from the club said they were eager to allow Wright to gain first-team minutes ahead of Australia’s debut appearance in the Copa America this summer.

Johnson said that Wright was joining a ‘fantastic club’.

“I hold Bailey Wright in the highest regard as a man, a professional and a footballer,” Johnson said.

“After his injury, minutes have been hard to come by and we feel this is the right move for him and Bristol City to go and play football at a fantastic club in Sunderland.”

Chief Executive Mark Ashton added: “On behalf of everyone at Bristol City I want to thank Bailey for all he has done for this club.

“From the moment he arrived he has been the model professional and ambassador and we all wish him well.”

Wright has experience of winning promotion from League One, part of the Preston North End side that was promoted under Simon Grayson in the 2014-15 season.
