The Black Cats have parted company with Parkinson after a disappointing run of form, meaning the club are now searching for the third manager of the Stewart Donald regime.
So who is available, who could come under consideration and what names would fans like to see given a shot? We round-up the early runners and riders for the Stadium of Light vacancy:
5. Garry Monk
Monk has spent most of his managerial career in the Championship, but could be prepared to drop down to League One after leaving Sheffield United. He’s no stranger to the North East either, having previously managed Middlesbrough. Photo: Tony Marshall
6. Lee Johnson
The 39-year-old has managed Oldham, Barnsley and Bristol City through a promising managerial career - and could be an attractive appointment given his experience of League One. Photo: George Wood
7. Roy Keane
A name which will no doubt be mentioned in some quarters, Keane is eager to return to management. Whether he would be willing to manage in League One remains to be seen. Photo: Lewis Storey
8. Nigel Pearson
National reports have already linked Pearson with the job, and he was under consideration following the departure of Jack Ross too. He’s be a safe pair of hands, and has experience of a higher level. Photo: RICHARD HEATHCOTE
