And to celebrate his career, we’re taking a look at some brilliant, retro photos of the Hendon-born former goalkeeper during his Black Cats career.

‘Monty’ made a record 627 appearances for his hometown club, including 537 in the league, after joining the club as a youngster in 1960. He also pulled off a stunning double save in the famous 1973 FA Cup Final victory against Leeds United at Wembley.
