With a £2.5million wage ceiling now in play, Phil Parkinson is having to turn his attention to new targets as he continues his squad reshuffle.
So he could turn to under-21 players to help fill out the squad?
Any players aged under 21 as of January 1 this year are exempt from the cap, and here’s 11 of the best young free agents who could help Sunderland beat the salary cap:
1. Dimitri Sea
Most recently on the books of Aston Villa, the 20-year-old striker enjoyed a purple patch in front of goal in the first half of the 2019/20 season before Premier League was brought to an end. His lack of first-team football may prove a concern, but he has undoubtedly got some ability. Photo: Pool
2. Morgan Feeney
The former Everton centre-back is currently on trial at the Academy of Light, and comes with some good pedigree courtesy of a long spell with the Toffees. Photo: Nathan Stirk
3. Tariq Hinds
While a full-back by nature, Hinds showed his versatility during his time with Tottenham Hotspur - turning out on both flanks and as a holding midfielder. At 20, he could be ready to try and make a mark in a first-team squad. Photo: Nathan Stirk
4. Kai Knight
The teenage defender was allowed to leave Birmingham City this summer, but is full of potential. He’d certainly be one for the future rather than an immediate first-team player, though. Photo: Ross Kinnaird
