17. Kim Heiselberg
Another whose potential was bigged-up after Sunderland splashed a six-figure sum on his services, the Swedish youngster spent just over three years in the North East before signing for Swindon Town - where his career petered out. Photo: Clive Brunskill

In 2006, Riera signed for Sunderland from Barcelona and made his debut in a 3–1 defeat to Southend United. He was then sent off just three minutes into the following match, a League Cup match against Bury which Sunderland lost 2–0 at Gigg Lane.
