The Black Cats have taken 21 points from losing positions this campaign, including five wins and six draws. Only Middlesbrough, 25, have taken more points after falling behind in the second tier.
Several of Sunderland’s goals have also come in the final 10 minutes of matches, highlighting the energy and resolve of this young side.
Here are the 11 times the Black Cats have come from behind to claim valuable points this season - with some brilliant photos to go with them.

9. Sunderland 4 Hull 4
This game felt like two points dropped rather than one gained after Sunderland conceded a last-gasp penalty. It came after a crazy contest in which the hosts had come from 1-0 and 3-2 down at the Stadium of Light. Photo: Frank Reid

10. Sunderland 2 Birmingham 1
Just when Sunderland’s play-off hopes appeared to be fizzling out, Trai Hume’s equaliser just before half-time drew them level against Birmingham. Amad then scored a stunning winner to keep Mowbray’s side within touching distance of the top six. Photo: Frank Reid

11. West Brom 1 Sunderland 2
Probably the most impressive of the lot. Trailing 1-0 at the break, Sunderland came back to beat play-off rivals West Brom, who hadn’t lost at home since October. The winning goal, which was finished by Cirkin six minutes from time, was a team goal worthy of winning any match. Photo: Clive Mason
