And the Sunderland boss may be tempted to take a look at a number of the free agents who could be available in League Two come the summer – with a number of talented players potentially available.
Here, we take a look at some of the options that may appeal to Parkinson:
5. CJ Hamilton (Mansfield Town)
Comfortable playing as a winger or wing-back, Hamilton's pace and end product have made him one of the most-feared players in League Two. Expect a number of League One sides to be playing close attention to his situation this summer. Photo: Alex Davidson
6. Jordan Lyden (Swindon Town)
Another Swindon player (can you tell they've been doing well this year?) - Lyden was an academy graduate of Aston Villa and has bossed the midfield for the Robins this term. His age suggests he'll only get better, too. Photo: Pete Norton
7. Callum McFadzean (Plymouth Argyle)
Sunderland will be looking for a left wing-back this summer, as they seek competition for Denver Hume, and may well be tempted by McFadzean - who has experience in League One after a spell with Sheffield United. Photo: Pete Norton
8. Richard O'Donnell (Bradford City)
If Sunderland lose Jon McLaughlin this summer - and here's hoping that isn't the case - they could do far worse than turning to the experienced O'Donnell. Photo: Pete Norton
