Phil Parkinson will no doubt have a number of targets in mind as he bids to strengthen the Black Cats’ playing squad.
And a glance into the past, at some previous players who were rumoured to be interesting Sunderland, could offer him some additional targets.
Here, we look at the failed transfer moves Sunderland could look to revive this summer:
1. Morgan Fox
The Sheffield Wednesday full-back was linked with the Black Cats in the summer, and is out of contract at Hillsborough this summer. Sunderland remain in need of cover on the left-hand side and Fox could prove an attractive option - although he is thought to also be attracting interest from Championship clubs. Photo: George Wood
2. Lawrence Shankland
A prolific striker, Shankland has been in fine form for Dundee United this term having been heavily rumoured to be interesting Sunderland last summer. Celtic and Rangers are among the clubs reportedly eyeing the Scottish international. Photo: Ian MacNicol
3. Sam Winnall
The Sheffield Wednesday man was one of a number of forwards reportedly eyed by Sunderland as they sought a replacement for Josh Maja. He’s proven in League One and out of contract this summer, so could be worth a punt. Photo: James Chance
4. Clark Robertson
A key target for Jack Ross in his first transfer window at the Stadium of Light, Robertson is now at Rotherham United. Could he be prised away to bolster Sunderland’s backline? Photo: Lewis Storey
