'Terrible': Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips slams Portsmouth defending as Charlie Wyke scores in League One clash
Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips says Portsmouth’s ‘terrible’ defending helped Sunderland in front at Fratton Park.
Charlie Wyke netted his 26th goal of the season in the first half of the League One clash as he steered home Jordan Jones’ teasing corner.
But with the striker left unmarked, Phillips – who is offering punditry on the game for Sky Sports – was critical of the home side’s defensive efforts.
"Kenny Jackett will be going mad in there at half-time,” he said.
“I say it’s a simple header, don’t take anything away from Charlie – when you’re in that rich vein of form anything you put on target generally goes in.
"The defending was terrible, but nevertheless you have to put it in the back of the net and it’s a great header.”
