The Black Cats fell behind in the 13th minute when Luke Cundle’s effort deflected off Luke O’Nien and past goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

It was a tough first half for Tony Mowbray’s side as the hosts dominated possession and doubled their lead through Harry Darling on the stroke of half-time.

Sunderland pulled a goal back through Jack Clarke at the start of the second half but couldn’t salvage a point.

Here’s how the game played out:

What to make of that side

So it’s one change for Sunderland following Tuesday’s goalless draw against Blackpool.

Dan Neil comes back into the starting XI in place of Amad who drops to the bench.

Dennis Cirkin and Jay Matete return to the bench as Edouard Michut and Leon Dajaku are left out of the squad.

Swansea have made four changes following their 2-1 win at Watford on Wednesday, with Hary Darling, Joel Latibeaudiere, Ollie Cooper and Luke Cundle coming into the starting XI.

2’ Early chance for Swansea

4’ Pritchard up top

Sunderland have started wit Pritchard playing through the middle, with Roberts on the right and Clarke on the left.

Embleton is playing just ahead of Evans and Neil in midfield.

6’ Batth conects with a free-kick

Sunderland are looking to press high up the pitch in the early exchanges as Swansea look to play out from the back.

The visitors won a free-kick there, and Batth connected with Embleton’s delivery, yet the effort was comfortable for Benda to save.

11’ Patterson saves

That was a let off for Sunderland.

Gooch’s pass in field was misplaced and went to Cundle on a central position.

The midfielder’s shot from the edge of the box was kept out by a low save from Patterson.

‘Ollie Cooper, he’s one of our own,’ chant the home fans.

Sunderland were cut open on the left as Manning clipped the ball to Grimes in the box.

The midfielder then cut the ball back for Cooper, whose effort deflected off O’Nien and into the net.

1-0 Swansea.

21’ Sunderland finding it tough

Swansea have played some really neat football in this first half and have dominated possession with 63 per cent.

Sunderland have struggled to retain possession for large spells.

Dan Neil has also been shown the first yellow card of the match.
