There’s also talk of incoming deals with Jobe Bellingham thought to be set for a medical ahead of his £3million move from Birmingham City while sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and head of recruitment Stuart Harvey will also be eyeing additions in forward areas.
But which players could leave Sunderland this season amid interest from elsewhere? Here, we provide some context surrounding the club’s transfer exit possibilities ahead of the summer window and offer our thoughts on the outcome of each individual situation.
5. Anthony Patterson
Anthony Patterson's stock is clearly on the rise and Leicester City have been linked with a deal for the England U21 international in recent windows. However, their relegation to the Championship and oncoming firesale likely means their interest will have seriously cooled. Other clubs have been mentioned but for now, it feels likely that Patterson will remain Sunderland's number-one goalkeeper into next season. In the event of further transfer interest, Sunderland would command a fair fee given Patterson's age, talent and profile. Photo: Clive Mason
6. Ellis Taylor
Although under contract for next season, Ellis Taylor faces a huge battle to work his way into Sunderland's first-team plans with another loan exit likely on the cards to aid the former Hartlepool man's development. Photo: FRANK REID 2021
7. Leon Dajaku
Leon Dajaku's move to the Stadium of Light is a transfer that hasn't really worked out for either the player or the club. The German is under contract next season ahead of his return from loan club St Gallen. However, it is expected that the attacker will likely leave Sunderland once again during the summer window. Whether on another loan or a permanent deal remains to be seen. Photo: Stu Forster
8. Max Thompson
A similar situation to that of Caden Kelly. Thompson has done well for Sunderland's U21 side but at 21-years-old, will probably need to go out on loan to experience regular senior football at some point. That move could well come during the summer transfer window for the ex-Burnley man, who is still under contract with Sunderland for another season. Photo: Clive Brunskill
