Sunderland are stepping up their preparations ahead of the new Championship campaign – but what is their strongest available XI?
The Black Cats have made several new signings this summer and could still strengthen in the transfer market over the next month.
Head coach Tony Mowbray is still dealing with multiple injury issues, though, with Corry Evans, Ross Stewart, Elliot Embleton, Jay Matete and Aji Alese set to miss the start of the campaign.
Defender Jenson Seelt has also been managing an ankle issue.
Ahead of the side’s season opener against Ipswich on August 6, we’ve put together what we think is Sunderland’s strongest XI and bench – only including players currently available.

5. LB: Dennis Cirkin
After missing the play-off matches against Luton with an ankle issue last season, the 21-year-old returned to action in the match against Real Mallorca and is back in contention to start the season. Photo: Frank Reid

6. CM: Dan Neil
With Sunderland captain Corry Evans set to be sidelined for the start of the season, Neil is expected to stay in a deeper midfield role. The 21-year-old has been given more licence to get forward during pre-season though. Photo: Martin Swinney

7. CM: Pierre Ekwah
It’s hoped Ekwah can maintain the excellent form he showed at the end of last season, when the 21-year-old formed a promising partnership with Neil. Photo: Frank Reid

8. RW: Patrick Roberts
Roberts, 26, only has a year left on his contract at Sunderland. The winger will be hoping to earn a new deal at the Stadium of Light after playing a key role last season. Photo: Martin Swinney
