Black Cats boss Lee Johnson named a young side for the clash ahead of the Wearsiders’ trip to Gillingham in League One this weekend with Denver Hume the only senior starter.
Hume was handed the armband and saw his side beat the young Red Devils thanks to goals from Tyrese Dyce and Stephen Wearne.
Wearne opened his account for the Black Cats in last weeks win over Lincoln City and doubled his tally for the competition with the winner at the Stadium of Light.
The result see’s Sunderland into the knockout phase of the competition as they look to defend the trophy they won in March last season.
But here though, we look at what’s been happening around League One over the last 24-hours.

5. Owls opt out of Woods deal
Sheffield Wednesday have decided against the signing of free agent Sam Woods. The defender had been on trial with the Owls after his departure from Premier League side Crystal Palace but boss Darren Moore has chosen not to hand the 23-year-old a deal with National League side Barnet swooping in instead. The Star reported Woods played for the Owls’ Under-23s against Sheffield FC in late September but no deal has been agreed with Woods now linking up with the Bees. Dean Brennan, Barnet head coach, said: “We have been tracking Sam since day one back in June but we have had to be patient. I know what Sam is all about and his attributes will bring our squad what we have been looking for in that department.” (Photo by Jack Thomas/Getty Images) Photo: Jack Thomas
6. Former Cats striker gives views on Ipswich talisman
Former Sunderland striker Marcus Stewart is the latest to have weighed in on Ipswich Town’s on loan striker Macauley Bonne. Stewart was a fan favourite at Portman Road before his move to Wearside and he believes the man on loan from Queens Park Rangers holds the key to the Tractor Boys’ success this season having scored nine in 11 appearances. “At the moment he’s getting the goals that could get Ipswich into the play-offs, because you need a goalscorer,” Stewart told the East Anglian Daily Times. “Every club wants and needs a goalscorer, Macauley has got off to a great start. My goal when I played was to get 10 goals before Christmas, your half-way marker. Anything more than that was a bonus, so he’s well on course to do that. If he can do that, as I said, they have a goalscorer in their ranks and Ipswich have a real chance.” (Photo by Bryn Lennon/Getty Images) Photo: Bryn Lennon
Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman insists his side must cure their away day hoodoo with another opportunity to do so against Cheltenham this weekend.
Accrington have won just one of their six games on the road this season but still find themselves in a healthy mid-table position having won four of five at the Wham Stadium. And Coleman is hoping his side are refreshed after the international break as they go in search of three away points at the Jonny-Rock’s Stadium. “We did well against Ipswich, we worked hard, but we have got to improve our form on the road. I think we are up there in the stats table for unforced errors leading to goals and we have to eliminate that. Most of the games, we defend quite well but we give silly goals away. We have to do it on the road, we have to find a way to win away from home and we have been working on that all week (Photo by George Wood/Getty Images) Photo: George Wood
Plymouth Argyle sit at the top of the League One table and that is, in-part, down to the goal scoring exploits of Scottish striker Ryan Hardie. The 24-year-old has scored 10 goals in 15 appearances in all competitions this season but was overlooked by national team manager Steve Clarke for Scotland’s latest World Cup qualifiers. But the Argyle striker admits his start to the season is just that and he needs to kick on. Hardie told BBC Sport after his side's 2-1 win over Burton Albion on Saturday: "Internationals are where you want to be as a football player, but as I said to him - we had a chat about it - I've only scored 10 goals, it's only a start, I want to go and get 20 and see where that takes me. I don't want to stop at 10 and say I should be in it, I want to just keep going and see where it takes me." (Photo by Alex Davidson/Getty Images) Photo: Alex Davidson
