The left-sided player, who can play at either full-back or on the wing, has been involved with the Black Cats' under-23 side this term.

But the Echo understands that Kokolo was told earlier this year that he would not be handed fresh terms at the Academy of Light, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

And the Frenchman – who spent time on loan at Darlington last season – has now made a surprising move to Championship side Middlesbrough, where he will team-up with their under-23 side.

The 19-year-old played for Monaco in his native France before joining Sunderland, and will now stay on Teesside until at least 2022 after signing his new deal.

Sunderland, meanwhile, have taken Blackburn Rovers striker Chanka Zimba on trial.
