The transfer window is set to reopen this month – with Sunderland looking to bolster their squad.
The Black Cats will be assessing all positions, with central midfield and up front key areas where they will be looking to strengthen. Of course, Sunderland will be looking to sign players permanently, yet they could also find value in the loan market – as they have done in the past.
Here are nine Premier League players who could be available on loan this summer who the Black Cats could look at:

5. Tom Cannon (Leicester)
Several Championship clubs, including Sunderland, were credited with interest in the striker last summer but couldn’t compete with Leicester’s offer to Everton. Cannon only made 13 Championship appearances for the Foxes during the 2023/24 season after overcoming an injury setback. A loan move may suit the 21-year-old striker, whose game time may be limited following Leicester’s promotion to the Premier League. Photo: Michael Regan

6. Alex Matos (Chelsea)
The highly-rated teenager experienced regular first-team football in the Championship after joining Huddersfield in January. Despite the Terriers’ relegation, Matos, 19, was a regular starter in a central midfield position, making 19 league appearances. Photo: Richard Pelham

7. George Earthy (West Ham)
Sunderland have previously been successful signing players from West Ham, with Aji Alese and Pierre Ekwah becoming first-team players on Wearside. Earthy, 19, has predominantly played as an attacking midfielder for West Ham’s under-21s team and was part of the senior squad towards the end of the 2023/24 season, coming off the bench to score against Luton in the Premier League. 8. Charlie Patino (Arsenal)
While he made 33 Championship appearances on loan at Swansea during the 2023/24 campaign, Patino appears unlikely to break into the first team at Arsenal in the near future. Another loan move to a Championship club could allow the 20-year-old central midfielder to gain more first-team experience. Photo: Eddie Keogh
