The final stretch of the league season is underway as teams jostle for position at both ends of the table. With the end of the season in sight, the summer transfer window is slowly closing in, giving Sunderland another chance to strengthen their squad.
But just who should they be targeting when the window reopens? Could the answer be right on their doorstep? A whole host of players have impressed in the second-tier this season and shown they are more than capable of performing at Championship level.
Here, we take a look at nine of the Championship’s top performers this season that Sunderland could sign when the summer transfer window opens.
How many of these would you like to see at the Stadium of Light next season? Follow us on our social media channels and let us know your thoughts there.

5. Viktor Johansson
No one has averaged more saves per match this season than Johansson. At just 24, the Swedish stopper would fit into Sunderland’s focus on signing younger players with sell-on value and could be someone they move for if Rotherham United fail to beat the drop. Photo: Matt McNulty

6. Cody Drameh
Drameh joined Luton Town from Leeds United in January and has played a major role in helping the Hatters force themselves into the play-off picture. Only two players average more tackles per game than the young right-back. Photo: Tony Marshall

7. Joel Piroe
Only three players average more than three shots per game in the Championship this season: Viktor Gyokeres, Joel Piroe and Ross Stewar.. The former will likely cost in the region of £20m this summer whilst the latter is already at the Stadium of Light. Piroe likely won’t come cheap but he has shown throughout the years he can score goals at this level. Photo: Dan Istitene

8. Malcolm Ebiowei
Ebiowei has impressed for Hull City this season and ranks among the division’s top dribblers. Liam Rosenior has spoken about his desire to see the 19-year-old return to the MKM Stadium after his short-term loan deal is completed - could Sunderland swoop ahead of the Tigers? Photo: George Wood
