Malick Fofana latest as Sunderland race to conclude potential record deal after 11pm deadline

Sunderland are not yet done despite the 11pm transfer deadline passing

Sunderland are still working to conclude a deal for Lyon winger Malick Fofana following the conclusion of the summer transfer window.

It's understood that the Black Cats were able to submit a deal sheet to the Premier League ahead of the 11pm deadline, which grants the club an extra two hours to conclude all paperwork surrounding the deal. A deal sheet sees Sunderland declare that they have closed negotiations with the other club, and state the agreed fee. It's understood that Sunderland have after a dramatic day finally secured a full agreement with the Belgian international over a switch to the Stadium of Light, with an initial fee of €30 million agreed. The fee could rise by an extra €6 million depending on performance, which would see the 21-year-old become the club's record transfer signing.

Sunderland agreed a deal early on deadline day to sign Fofana, but then faced a late hijack from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace. Sunderland made a renewed push to secure Fofana's signature and the player eventually settled on a move to Wearside. It's understood that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is in Lyon to oversee the final stages of the deal.

It remains to be seen whether Sunderland have submitted any other deal sheets, having submitted a late offer to Augsburg for versatile forward Alexis Claude-Maurice. It also remains to be seen whether Ajax have been able to conclude a deal for Simon Adingra, with announcements possible after the deadline as long as the transfer has been agreed in time.
