Florent Ghisolfi explains why Sunderland have signed Malick Fofana as deadline-day drama ends in success

Sunderland have concluded their fifth signing of the summer transfer window

Sunderland have confirmed the arrival of Lyon winger Malick Fofana on a long-term contract.

It concludes one of the most extraordinary transfer sagas of recent times on Wearside, with a Crystal Palace almost hijacking a deal that had been agreed early on deadline day. However, after further talks and the personal intervention of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Fofana recommitted to the move to Wearside.

The deal could yet become a club record transfer, with the Black Cats paying an initial €30 million that could rise by another €5 million depending on performance.

Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi said Fofana had all the attributes to be a success in the Premier League.

“Malick has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League,” Ghisolfi said.

“He is a player with huge potential and Sunderland AFC will provide him with the right environment to continue to develop and prosper.

“He operates off the left and will complement the versatility of the other wide men we have at the club, who can play across both flanks. We are delighted to welcome Malick to the Club and look forward to supporting him as he takes the next steps in his career.”

In a statement, the club said Fofana was realising his dream to play in the Premier League and that he would offer Sunderland versatility in forward areas.

“Belgium winger Malick Fofana has become Sunderland AFC’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window, joining from Olympique Lyonnais on a long-term contract,” the statement reads.

“Known for his pace, dribbling, and direct attacking play, the 21-year-old arrives on Wearside from Ligue 1 with a strong pedigree in the game. Predominantly a left-sided attacker, he has also operated in a central role, offering SAFC flexibility across the attacking front line.

“Fofana is relishing the opportunity to continue his career in England – and fulfil a long-held ambition of playing in the Premier League. Sunderland AFC welcomes Malick and his family to the Club and wishes him every success in red and white.”

Lyon have confirmed that the deal could eventually reach €35 million, and that they have retained a sell-on of 12.5% of any future profit.
