And the striker has been talking about that move in the Argentine press – hailing the American top flight as a growing league.

He told Solo Ascenso: "It is a great step for my career because I will continue to grow.

"The league grew a lot, now there are many young boys, it is competitive.

“I already spoke with the coach and with the sports director. There are three Argentines in the team.”

Sunderland have opted against offering Scottish youth international Liam Burt a contract, according to reports.

The Glasgow Evening Times suggest that Burt - who was bidding to win a deal with the Black Cats’ under-23 side - was turned down in preference of a more experienced alternative.

Burt also spent time training with Barnsley and was thought to have impressed at Oakwell, but the same report states he will not be earning a deal at Oakwell.

"It has been a crazy, unexpected few days for us all," boss David Artell told the club website.

"It has been tough. The players and staff were all tested over the weekend and we have had a couple of positives tests.

"They will self-isolate for 10 days and although they can't do much, we will set them a programme to keep them as fit as we can. They are all in disbelief because they have no symptoms but this is the nature of the virus."

The Alex are set to travel to Sunderland on October 20.
