The League One campaign has been suspended since mid-March amid the coronavirus outbreak, with the Black Cats’ last fixture coming on March 10.
And with the EFL having set a deadline of July 31 for the season to be completed, fears are now growing that the campaign will be scrapped.
Indeed, reports in the national press this week have suggested that a vote between third tier clubs could be held as early as next week - with the season likely to be ‘abandoned’ as a result.
But what do Sunderland fans think?
And while the margins were tight, fans have backed the current plans to continue the season once it is safe to do so.
53% of those who voted believed that the League One campaign should be completed, while 47% called for the remaining games to be scrapped.
Sunderland have eight games left to play in the current season, and currently sit just outside the play-off places in League One.
Completing the season looks to be the Black Cats’ best chance of securing promotion this term, given that all sporting merit scenarios - such as points-per-game - would still leave Sunderland out of promotion contention.
