Sunderland star praised for mental strength after playing key role in Fulham win

Wilson Isidor got the only goal of the game as Sunderland saw off Premier League rivals Fulham at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland got their Premier League campaign up and running as Wilson Isidor grabbed the only goal of their home win against Fulham - and the Black Cats forward has been praised for his mental strength after making the difference at the Stadium of Light.

The Haiti international was introduced into the action midway through the second-half as he replaced Brian Brobbey in the lead role in Regis Le Bris’ frontline and he took just ten minutes to make an impact as he converted from close range after getting on the end of a Habib Diarra cross. However, Isidor’s impact could have been even more immediate after he struck the post from around ten yards just five minutes after he had made his way into the game.

That proved to be a temporary reprieve for the Cottagers as the former Zenit Saint-Petersburg forward made amends for his miss with a cool and composed finish that went on to earn Sunderland’s first three points of a historic season. Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe believes Isidor should be praised for moving on from missing a ‘golden opportunity’ in such clinical fashion.

Speaking as part of the broadcaster’s commentary team during the game, the former Everton left-back said: “To score those consistently in the Premier League, you need mental strength. He’s missed a golden opportunity but he didn’t let it affect him and he was ready when the next one came along. Fulham have talked about how aggressive they can be and they step high up the pitch, Andersen is playing on the Sunderland attackers. It’s a wonderfully weighted pass, the goalkeeper misreads, thinks he can get there but it’s a wonderfully weighted cross.

“Don’t worry about the one that you missed. Can you get on the end of the next one that comes your way? He just waits and waits and taps it home. He’ll be absolutely delighted. Wilson Isidor deserves a lot of credit after a big miss because that is a big goal.”
