Sunderland's squad value compared to Premier League rivals as summer transfer window closes

Sunderland continued working hard to add to their squad until the final hours of the summer transfer window.

Sunderland have taken a measured approach to the summer transfer window activity and the events of the last three months have been far less hectic than what Black Cats fans witnessed 12 months ago.

Last summer can only be described as transformational as Regis Le Bris’ promotion-winning squad was given a complete overhaul with likes of Granit Xhaka, Brian Brobbey and Robin Roefs were all snapped up. A new look Sunderland side went on to take the club into European competition for only the second time in their history by securing a spot in this season’s Europa League with a seventh place finish in the Premier League.

Preparations for what will be a busy season on a number of fronts have brought further activity in the summer transfer window with defensive duo Dayaan Methalie and Thomas Meunier both joining the club along with Royal Antwerp’s highly-rated midfielder Jules Ahoka. The final days of the summer transfer window proved to be a challenge for the Stadium of Light hierarchy as they looked to add a defender and a winger to their squad but they got there.

A loan deal was agreed for Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Danso and he will form part of the squad that will attack the Europa League this season and Sunderland saw off late competition from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace to secure a permanent move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana. Sunderland also signed Ecuadorian striker Juan Riquelme Angulo Caicedo from Independiente del Valle.
