'Big future' – Gary Neville delivers transfer verdict on promising Sunderland star amid England speculation
Gary Neville wants Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young back at Salford City next season amid England speculation
Gary Neville has delivered a glowing assessment of Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young, backing the highly-rated prospect to enjoy a bright future in the game amid growing England speculation.
Young, currently on loan at Salford City, has continued his development with regular senior football, building on a breakthrough campaign that saw him make 27 appearances in all competitions last season. The 19-year-old has already surpassed that tally this term, featuring 45 times across all competitions.
Young has long been viewed as one of Sunderland’s most promising academy products, having joined the club at the age of seven before signing his first professional contract in November 2023. His early senior experience came during a loan spell at Darlington, where he impressed and was named the club’s Young Player of the Season. Subsequent loans to Salford City have accelerated his development further, with Sunderland viewing the move as an ideal environment for him to gain consistent game time and experience.

On the international stage, Young has steadily progressed through England’s youth ranks, representing the U18s, U19s and U20s, before earning a call-up to the U21 squad. His trajectory has led to suggestions that he could one day challenge for a place in the senior setup.
Speaking about the young goalkeeper, Neville said: “He’s done really well. Obviously, he is on loan with us until the end of the season. I hope we can get into League One so he can come with us, and he is very composed for a young goalkeeper. He has a big future.”
