Donald has come under increasing pressure from an angry fanbase with the club facing up to a third season in League One.

A host of individuals and groups have been linked with a move to buy the club with Mark Campbell, Sammy Yu and William Storey all keen.

BBC Radio Newcastle are reporting that Donald has now entered into a period of exclusivity with a potential buyer though the identity has not been confirmed.

They do, however, report it is NOT either Campbell or Storey. They add the club could even be sold before the season starts.

BBC Radio Newcastle’s Nick Barnes tweeted on Saturday evening: “I understand Sunderland AFC owner Stewart Donald has entered a period of exclusivity with a prospective buyer - I believe it's not Mark Campbell or William Storey- with a view to selling before the season starts. Sale could be much sooner #safc”

Ex-Sunderland defender Micky Gray has been helping to try and broker a takeover deal for an unnamed consortium, while a local consortium has also been linked but no details have yet emerged over the identities of those involved.
