Sunderland players on a break as English football awaits outcome of key meetings after coronavirus suspension

All football in the Premier League, Championship and League One and Two was suspended following the coronavirus outbreak.

As things stand all fixtures are suspended until April 3 but there are fears it could be much longer.

The Premier League, EFL and UEFA are all set to hold key meetings over the coming days to discuss future plans.

There have been some suggestions the season could be extended into the summer months.

The Sunderland squad were already due to have some time off this week due to not having a game this coming Saturday anyway after Bury were expelled from the EFL earlier this season.

After the suspension of all games Sunderland's fixtures against Blackpool and Southend United have been postponed, both away from home.

Phil Parkinson had already made it clear that his players would not be travelling abroad on holiday during their break.

Speaking earlier this month, he said: "It's important we give ourselves every chance of keeping that virus away.

"We said to the lads they can't go abroad, some wanted to go away.

"We don't think it's wise for anyone to go abroad, and the players understand that."

The National League did go ahead at the weekend, Hartlepool United drew 1-1 away at Sutton United but the National League board are due to meet today and they too could suspend their campaign.
