Sanderson has been a star performer under Lee Johnson with the Black Cats pushing for automatic promotion.

Indeed Johnson has recently described the 21-year-old defender as 'an absolute Rolls Royce of a player'.

The Daily Mail report: “Sunderland hope their status, plus the relationship Sanderson enjoys with Johnson, means they will be at the forefront of any decision the youngster makes but his rapid improvement as a centre-back in what is a demanding league means there is plenty of competition.”

Sunderland are chasing automatic promotion and face Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers away on Saturday in League One.

Sunderland drew 1-1 with fellow promotion rivals Lincoln City last weekend at the Stadium of Light ahead of another crunch weekend.
