Régis Le Bris delivers verdict on Bournemouth defeat and makes Sunderland admission

Sunderland could be bottom of the Premier League table on Monday night after losing a fourth league game in a row

Régis Le Bris admits Sunderland's league position is a worry after they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

The result saw the Black Cats drop to second bottom in the table as Bournemouth climbed above them, and they could be bottom at close of play on Monday if Tottenham get a positive result against Coventry City. Le Bris said the reality of Sunderland's situation was 'really clear' after they slipped to their fourth league defeat in a row.

“It [the league position] is absolutely a worry," Le Bris said.

"If you lose games, then it is clear what is going to happen. We cannot ignore that. We have to win points, and we have to do that in different conditions and different scenarios. We know that. At the minute, it is not the case. It is not happening, and so the reality of the situation is really clear."

Sunderland's defensive woes, evident from the first game of the season, continued after Kevin Danso was shown a red card just 17 minutes into the game for denying Evanilson a clear goalscoring opportunity. That move came from a long ball down the pitch from Bournemouth, very similar to the move that led the opening goal and a number of difficult moments throughout the game.

Sunderland then gave up a second goal just minutes into the second half as Omar Alderete played a loose backpass into the feet of Evanilson, who did superbly to round Robin Roefs and score.

"It was a tough afternoon," Le Bris said.

"It was a bad start, conceding after six minutes, which was exactly the situation we wanted to avoid. By 15 minutes, we were ten men against 11, which meant we had to do that for 75 minutes or even more with the added time. We survived until half-time, changed the shape to manage the game differently, and I think we were well-aligned. But then after one or two minutes of the second half, we were 2-0 down with another big mistake. That basically summarised the afternoon. It was tough to take. It wasn’t the personality of Sunderland, that is for sure. We are in a busy schedule, that’s fair to say, and we are in this learning process. It is not a straight line, but this now is really hard to accept.

“It’s always a different player every time [making mistakes], so it is hard to fix. There is not really a specific pattern, so it is about accountability, it is about discipline and it is about reading the game well. At the minute, that is not the case and we are getting punished."
