Gooch, a regular in the Premier League squad and late sub at Liverpool on Saturday, was included in the Premier League 2 match against Tottenham in order to get some game time.

However, he injured his left ankle midway through the first half at Eppleton CW where he seemed to land awkwardly.

After lengthy treatment, he was carried off in the 27th minute with boss David Moyes looking on concerned.

Gooch, who had been involved in the opening Cats goal in the 2-2 draw, would have been looking to impress his manager.

Coach Andy Welsh said it was too early to tell how bad the injury looked.

“It was disappointing for Lynden,” said Welsh. “We’ll have to assess him and see how it is.”

The USA international was one of three members of the Premier League squad to start last night against Spurs.

Adnan Januzaj did his chances no harm at all when he streaked clear to score, playing the first 54 minutes before being substituted, while his old Man United pal Donald Love played the entire game in midfield.

There was no place for comeback man Jan Kirchhoff, who had played and scored for Welsh’s side in last week’s 2-0 win at Man United.

Meanwhile, coach Welsh has been linked with a possible move to Wigan who have appointed pal Warren Joyce as their new boss.
