Sunderland make big Europa League calls as Chemsdine Talbi and Melker Ellborg are omitted

Sunderland have named their Europa League squad, with Chemsdine Talbi and Melker Ellborg among the notable omissions.

Sunderland have confirmed their 22-man squad for the league phase of the Europa League, with Chemsdine Talbi and Melker Ellborg among the most notable omissions.

Talbi has featured sporadically for Régis Le Bris since arriving on Wearside but did not get on during Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Fulham at the weekend. The winger has now been left off the club’s main European squad list altogether, with Sunderland forced into some difficult calls following their extensive summer recruitment.

Ellborg has also missed out. Robin Roefs and Simon Moore are the two goalkeepers named, leaving the Swedish stopper outside the initial squad for Sunderland’s return to European competition. Sunderland have selected nine defenders: Omar Alderete, Dan Ballard, Kevin Danso, Trai Hume, Reinildo, Dayann Méthalie, Thomas Meunier, Nordi Mukiele and Luke O'Nien. Jules Ahoka, Habib Diarra, Enzo Le Fée, Chris Rigg, Noah Sadiki and Granit Xhaka make up the midfield group, while Nilson Angulo, Brian Brobbey, Malick Fofana, Wilson Isidor and Romaine Mundle are listed among the forwards.

Deadline-day signing Juan Riquelme Angulo is another player to miss out. The 18-year-old Ecuadorian striker arrived from Independiente del Valle as a longer-term development signing and has not been included in Le Bris’ initial European group. Aji Alese, Alan Browne and Jocelin Ta Bi are also absent from the 22-player list.

The selection reflects some of the knock-on effects of Sunderland’s busy summer. Florent Ghisolfi strengthened the squad significantly ahead of a campaign across four competitions, but UEFA registration rules mean Le Bris cannot simply include every senior player available to him. Eligible younger players can still be used through UEFA’s separate List B system, giving Sunderland some additional flexibility as the league phase progresses.
