Sunderland hit with early suspension blow for Leeds United clash as Premier League release red card statement

Sunderland’s Premier League troubles deepened with a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon

Sunderland will be without Kevin Danso for Leeds United's visit to the Stadium of Light next Sunday after the centre back was shown a red card 17 minutes into the defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

The Black Cats endured a torrid start to the game, with a mix-up between Danso and fellow centre back Omar Alderete allowing striker Evanilson to run through just five minutes into the contest. The striker unselfishly crossed for Marcus Tavernier, who headed into an empty net. Ten minutes later the centre backs were again caught out by a long ball forward, Evanilson running through and catching Danso in possession. The centre back fouled and was shown a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, a decision which was quickly cleared by VAR.

A statement released by the Premier League match centre said: "The referee’s call of red card to Danso for denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO) was checked and confirmed by VAR. VAR: “Evanilson has the ball and he's pulled to the floor outside the penalty area by Danso.”

Denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity carries a one-game suspension. They do not carry over to the Europa League, so Danso will be available for the clash with Lech Poznan on Thursday night before missing Sunday's Premier League fixture against Leeds United.

It leaves head coach Régis Le Bris with a major headache as Dan Ballard is not expected back from a hamstring injury until late November at the earliest. Omar Alderete's struggles this season mean the head coach might again have to bring Nordi Mukiele back to centre back, and consider a recall for Luke O'Nien.

Sunderland eventually fell to a 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth.
