Leeds United supporters pay respect to Sunderland figure as Niall Quinn and Jenson Seelt are spotted

The moments you may have missed before, during and after Sunderland’s game with Leeds United at the Stadium of Light

Sunderland returned to the Stadium of Light sitting seventh in the Premier League, firmly in the mix in the top half and carrying momentum into a testing home clash with Leeds United. Régis Le Bris’ side had taken 27 points from their opening 17 matches, conceding just 17 goals along the way, while Leeds arrived on Wearside down in 16th, still searching for consistency after a difficult run of results.

The backdrop pointed towards a tight, tactical contest, with Sunderland looking to make home advantage count and Leeds desperate for points to pull clear of the lower reaches. From pre-match moments and key tactical calls to incidents that slipped under the radar, here are the moments you may have missed before, during and after the action at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland suffer massive blow

Sunderland were forced into a late defensive reshuffle after Dan Ballard was ruled out of the clash with Leeds United due to an ankle injury. The centre-back had picked up the issue in last week’s 0-0 draw with Brighton, with the club initially hopeful it was not serious, but Ballard was ultimately deemed unavailable on matchday.

Régis Le Bris confirmed Sunderland were still awaiting clarity on the extent of the problem, with the defender now facing a potential spell on the sidelines over the New Year period.

“Dan got a kick on his ankle against Brighton and was a bit too short to be available today,” Le Bris said ahead of the game. He’s been really important for us - always a shame to lose a player like him. But you have to manage your circumstances and we have options to manage this game. We’ll have to wait until Monday for a clear diagnosis.”

In Ballard’s absence, Dennis Cirkin was handed his first competitive appearance of the season and his first Premier League start, with Nordi Mukiele moving into central defence and Trai Hume shifting across to right-back.

Niall Quinn and Jenson Seelt spotted

Sunderland legend Niall Quinn was among those in attendance at the Stadium of Light, watching the game alongside his sons. The former striker was spotted in the press box ahead of kick-off, where he stopped to say hello to several familiar faces. Also in attendance was Jenson Seelt, who is currently on loan with Wolfsberg, having temporarily departed Wearside earlier this season.

Sunderland and Leeds United pay tribute

Sunderland and Leeds supporters united ahead of kick-off to observe a minute’s silence in memory of Patrick Treuer, following his passing at the age of 52. Sunderland AFC confirmed earlier this week that the club’s non-executive director had died, prompting tributes across the Stadium of Light.

In a statement released on Christmas Day, Sunderland AFC said it was “deeply saddened” by Treuer’s passing, paying tribute to his role in the club’s journey from League One to the Premier League. Treuer also served as Chief Financial Officer of Louis Dreyfus Company B.V., which also released a statement recognising his significant contribution to the business and extending condolences to his family and loved ones.
