Sunderland issue clear response to Newcastle United ticket speculation and challenge derby fan reports

Sunderland have addressed speculation over Newcastle fans’ return derby allocation and challenged reports about their own supporters’ behaviour

Newcastle United’s reduced ticket allocation for Sunderland fans will not automatically be matched when the clubs meet at the Stadium of Light in May, with the Black Cats confirming that no discussions about the return fixture have taken place.

Sunderland have also expressed disappointment at reports focusing on incidents involving small groups of their supporters before March’s derby, pointing to the largely trouble-free policing operation that day. The comments follow Monday’s announcement that Sunderland’s allocation for the December 6 trip to St James’ Park will be 2,200 – 328 fewer tickets than the 2,528 available last season. Travelling supporters must also use designated coaches to and from the stadium.

Those restrictions prompted speculation about whether Newcastle fans could face similar conditions for the return game on Wearside. Sunderland say it is too early to make assumptions. A club statement said: “The club has noted recent speculation regarding arrangements for the return fixture at the Stadium of Light. No discussions have taken place to date, and it would therefore be premature to draw conclusions about the arrangements that may be recommended by the relevant authorities. Sunderland AFC will continue to represent its supporters’ interests and engage constructively with all relevant parties.”

Responding to reports referencing those incidents, a Sunderland spokesperson added: “Sunderland AFC is disappointed to see recent media reports referencing incidents involving small groups of our supporters at the March fixture, particularly given that the overall policing operation passed largely without incident, with three arrests made on the day.”

The club’s position leaves both ticketing and travel arrangements for May awaiting consideration. Newcastle’s announcement likewise stated that December’s travel requirements do not determine what will happen at the Stadium of Light.

The compulsory coach arrangements for Sunderland’s visit were recommended by Newcastle’s Safety Advisory Group following advice from Northumbria Police. Sunderland subsequently made their dissatisfaction with the decision public. December’s match has been moved to Sunday, December 6, with a 2pm kick-off for live coverage on Sky Sports. Further ticket information is due to follow.
