A Chris Maguire brace and strikes from Denver Hume, Charlie Wyke and Jack Diamond were enough for the Black Cats, who ran out 5-3 winners after Lewis Alessandra and Jon Mellish netted for Carlisle.

And fans were all saying the same thing after the contest – that Diamond must be in contention for the trip to Swindon Town on October 17.

@andy_mcgill joked: “Sunderland winning a trophy at Wembley this season then winning the league and clinching promotion when the fans can't go will definitely happen and be the most Sunderland thing ever.”

@Philip_RJ89 added: “I know this is ‘only’ an EFL Trophy game, but Christ knows where we’d be without Chris Maguire and his goals. Floundering without any real goal threat, I suspect.”

@buntingfootball tweeted: “Sunderland have been solid defensively this season, much better organised but tonight they've been poor at the back, given away sloppy goals. Clinical going forward has got them out of jail a complete opposite of what we have been seeing in the early weeks of the season”

@pjcatcherside1 commented: “13 goals in 2 cup games. There are goals in some of these players if we can just get some creativity into the team”

@Ian_Crow3 added: “Good win. Sloppy moments need cut out. But Maguire, Hume, Neil and Diamond impress. Neil and Diamond show why they should play in league, with latter getting a goal and former so good on ball. PP got dilemmas and Neil and Diamond must be in mind for Saturday.”

@pumayo said: “great to see diamond score in emphatic fashion after a good performance from him. making a strong case for inclusion against swindon”

@chrishughes_22 posted: “Jack Diamond great night for him. Haway Sunderland”
