Hume, an academy graduate, was able to walk off the field and Sunderland will hope that the injury is not a long-term one.

However, the club do have options in that area of the field – with McFadzean and Jake Vokins both able to provide cover and competition at left-back.

The Black Cats already have a number of senior defenders ruled-out of action, with Dion Sanderson, Arbenit Xhemajli and Jordan Willis all absent.

Conor McLaughlin also missed the play-off semi final at Lincoln after he too recently returned from injury.
