Sunderland squad contract situation latest after major Dan Ballard boost
When do the contracts of current Sunderland players come to an end?
Sunderland confirmed they had been handed a major boost on Sunday night when the Black Cats announced key defender Dan Ballard had put pen-to-paper on a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light.
The former Arsenal centre-back was a key part of the squad that earned promotion into the Premier League last season and wrote his name into Wearside folklore when he netted a late winner in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final against Coventry City. Ballard has shone throughout his first season as a top flight defender and provided two more memorable moments as he found the net in the opening day win against West Ham United and a fully deserved home draw with former club and current Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Ballard has now committed his future to the Black Cats until the summer of 2029 and Sunderland also have an option to extend the agreement by a further 12 months. The newly crowned North East Football Writers Player of the Year will now hope to continue impressing at club and international level as he prepares to represent Northern Ireland in their World Cup play-off with Italy later this month.
Speaking as the deal was announced, Black Cats director of football Florent Ghisolfi told the club website: “Dan represents both the legacy and the future of Sunderland AFC. He embodies our identity through his professionalism, consistency, and spirit. He has grown into a Premier League defender, but just as importantly, he has become a leader within our dressing room. We are proud that he believes in our purpose and our ambition. His commitment to Sunderland is a powerful message about who we are and what we intend to build.”
Ballard added: “I’m absolutely delighted to have signed a new contract. From the moment we began talks, it felt like an easy decision, and I’m happy to be extending my time at the club.”
The news one of their key players has committed their long-term future to the club will be a major boost for Sunderland fans - but when do the deals of other Black Cats stars come to a close?
