Exclusive:Kevin Phillips delighted by 'massive' Sunderland injury update

Kevin Phillips has given his view on Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey.

Brian Brobbey’s relatively short injury lay-off is a “massive boost” for Sunderland, according to Black Cats legend Kevin Phillips.

The Dutchman suffered a hamstring complaint during the international break, and was subsequently absent from last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion at the Stadium of Light. Prior to the break, the 24-year-old had caught the eye with a hat-trick against Manchester City in a 5-3 loss at the Etihad.

But in a pre-match press conference, Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris confirm that Brobbey is expected back in action sooner rather than later. In keeping with that prognosis, the striker also travelled as part of the Black Cats’ squad for their Europa League clash with Portuguese outfit Torreense on Thursday evening. And given that there were fears Brobbey could be out of action for a considerable while, Phillips has argued that his swift recovery represents a significant boon for Le Bris. Speaking exclusively to The Echo, courtesy of BestBettingSites, the popular Wearside icon said: “It's a massive boost.

“On one hand, losing him after he scored a hat-trick away at City, then fearing the worst... And then getting the good news that it's not as bad. So hopefully he's back in and around it in the next couple of games.

“They've missed him; it's as simple as that. But unfortunately, the team can't rely on just that one player. Other people need to step up. But yeah, it's a huge boost to have Brian back.”
