Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson reveals January update, how many he's targeting and when he'd like to get more business done by

Sunderland have so far added free agent Kyle Lafferty on a short-term deal until the end of the season and Bailey Wright on loan from Bristol City.

Parkinson hopes to add more before next Friday night’s 11pm deadline, with a central midfielder and cover at left-wing back the priority.

When quizzed on transfers, Parkinson said: “We are working towards a couple more additions, if we get the ones we want, great, if not we will stick with what we have got.

“We have had players like Tom Flanagan, Ethan Robson who haven’t made the 18 and Griggy too.

“If the right ones we can get deals done then we will look to add quality,” added Parkinson after the goalless draw with Doncaster Rovers at the Stadium of Light.

Pressed on whether there had been any progress in the past 24-hours, Parkinson added: “Dialogue has kept going between us and one or two clubs.”

Burton Albion striker Liam Boyce is in talks with Hearts after they had a bid accepted by the League One club.

As revealed by the Echo on Thursday interest in Boyce had already cooled.

Parkinson added: “We have got Charlie, Lafferty and Grigg, that No9 role McNulty can play there too.

“As much as we want cover and options we don’t want too many players and to give ourselves a problem.”

Sunderland have a busy week on the road next week with trips to Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday and the game away to Portsmouth next Saturday, the day after deadline.

Parkinson said in an ideal world he would like to get business done early next week.

He said: “Ideally, without doubt as we will be travelling towards the end of the week.

“We have been working on it again this morning, we see where the next few days take us.”

Parkinson confirmed there is no interest in Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith, currently on loan at QPR.
