Sunderland are close to securing a move for goalkeeper Jacob Carney.

The Manchester United stopper is set to be available on a free transfer.

And the Black Cats are closing in on a deal according to Alan Nixon of The Sun.

Sunderland allowed Remi Matthews to depart the Stadium of Light this summer leaving just Lee Burge and Anthony Patterson as senior goalkeepers.

It was reported by The Sun on Sunday recently that Sunderland had offered the 20-year-old a deal ahead of the summer transfer window.

Both Premier League Burnley and Brighton were also potentially interested in making a move for Carney this summer.

But according to the latest news, Sunderland now look to have won the race for his signature with the Black Cats close to finalising the move.

Darren Moore may regret Sheffield Wednesday decision following relegation

Carlton Palmer believes Darren Moore may question if he made a mistake by leaving Doncaster Rovers to join Sheffield Wednesday.

“If I was Darren Moore, you’d certainly be questioning leaving Doncaster when they were in a play-off position,” told This is Futbol.

“The chairman would have backed him at Doncaster, and they would have certainly been in the play-offs. And you look at the situation that Sheffield Wednesday are in, you don’t even know if they’re going to have a team to challenge in League One.

“So, I’m sure he will be questioning his decision, it's a difficult one. I’m not sure Darren is the type to walk away, but I’m sure he is saying he needs some assurances about the direction the club is going.”

"I don’t feel I’ve let them down. I understand the comments in terms of being disappointed," Moore said after moving to Wednesday.

"There is the timing, but I’m sure they are delighted for me as an individual.

"I leave the football club in great hands. Andy Butler will continue to the end of the season. They’re in good hands."
