Sanderson, who joined the Black Cats on a season-long loan deal in the summer transfer window, spent part of the 2019/20 campaign on loan with the Bluebirds and impressed in the second tier.

Sanderson has struggled for regular gametime since joining Sunderland and was an unused substitute at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

But speaking earlier this month he stressed he was keen to stay on Wearside.

"Yeah,” replied Sanderson, when asked if he was happy to remain at the Stadium of Light.

"I'm playing now and getting experience which is what I need - to get as much experience as I can.

"Hopefully I can achieve my goal of playing in the Premier League for my home club.”

Reports over the weekend claimed Cardiff had approached Wolves over the possibility of Sanderson returning to South Wales this month.

The Daily Mail report states that Neil Harris’ side asked the Premier League outfit if they would be prepared to cut-short the 21-year-old’s loan stint at the Stadium of Light before then sending him back on loan to Cardiff.

But that approach has been rejected, with Cardiff now turning their attentions to Crewe Alexandra defender Perry Ng – who reports suggest has already been the subject of a £250,000 bid from the Bluebirds.
