Lee Johnson has made no secret of his desire to bolster his forward line this month, with Stewart understood to be a leading target.

And the Daily Record now claim that the striker is travelling south to finalise a move to the Stadium of Light that will be worth up to £300,000.

The report suggests that Stewart will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal on Wearside, with the Black Cats beating Aberdeen, MK Dons and Rotherham to his signature.

Stewart, 24, has netted six times for Ross County this season and has previously attracted Championship interest.

His arrival could pave the way for Will Grigg to depart on a temporary basis, with a host of League One sides keen on the out-of-form Sunderland striker.

Shrewsbury Town remain the favourites, but Oxford United and Fleetwood Town are keen.
