Sunderland AFC transfer news RECAP: Pompey near appointment as Charlie Wyke on verge of 100 Black Cats appearances
Lee Johnson's men take on Accrington Stanley in League One this evening.
And Sunderland have momentum in the League One promotion race – with Johnson’s team unbeaten in their last nine fixtures in all competitions.
The Black Cats are just two points off the automatic promotion places and have won six of their last seven in the league.
But Johnson still has multiple injury concerns heading into the Accrington game after Tom Flanagan was forced off in the first half at Wembley against Tranmere Rovers.
First teamers Bailey Wright, Jordan Jones and Aiden O’Brien all missed the match.
Jake Vokins, Carl Winchester and Dion Sanderson were cup tied for the clash and could be in line to start.
Accrington sit tenth in the table and are only four points off the play-offs but have suffered back-to-back defeats against Bristol Rovers and MK Dons.
We’ll bring you the latest team news, analysis, insight and more throughout the day.

Sunderland duo eyed by Middlesbrough - reports
Middlesbrough are keeping tabs on a double swoop for Charlie Wyke and Jordan Jones.
That’s according to Football League World, who state that a potential move for Wyke could depend on what other targets are available, while also hinging on Sunderland’s hopes of securing promotion to the Championship.
Wyke, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season and has scored 25 goals in League One so far this campaign.
Jones is on loan at the Stadium of Light from Rangers but looks set to leave Ibrox permanently in the summer.
The attacker began his career on Teesside before moving to play in Scotland.
Sunderland cast eye over three trialists
Sunderland fielded three trialists in their under-23 draw with Wolves on Monday – as the club start to turn their focus to summer recruitment.
Gateshead midfielder Danny Greenfield is one of the players on trial with the Black Cats and he played the full 90 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Wolves.
And he was joined by Guiseley defender Nathan Newall, with the 19-year-old defender playing 71 minutes before being replaced by Ryan Wombwell.
The duo joined Tottenham’s Aaron Skinner – who also featured against Newcastle United last week – as the three trialists in the side.
Former Sunderland and Newcastle man on trial
Former Leicester, Sunderland and Newcastle right-back Danny Simpson is on trial with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday as he bids to find a new club after leaving Huddersfield last summer.
That’s according to the Leicester Mercury.
Can Sunderland get promoted this season?
Lee Johnsson has provided an injury update
“Denver has now trained without restriction,” said Johnson.
“The next step for him is to try to look at a consistent training period and minutes, so we might try to arrange a game next week behind closed doors at home against a local team.”
He continued: “Tom Flanagan is out with a hamstring injury and best case he’s going to be out for three to four weeks, which is disappointing.
Lee Johnson on Ross Stewart
Ross has had an amazing month, he has nought appearances, nought goals, nought assists and won one trophy, but on a serious note, it’s brilliant to have him back.

Charlie Wyke on 99 appearances for Sunderland
Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke will make his 100th Sunderland appearance in all competitions if he features against Accrington Stanley.
The 28-year-old former Hartlepool United loanee has enjoyed a resurgence at the Stadium of Light and is the joint top-scorer in League One this season.
Indeed, the Middlesbrough-born attacker has netted 26 times in all competitions so far this campaign, including five strikes in the Papa John’s Trophy, which Sunderland won against Tranmere Rovers last weekend.
Portsmouth nearing appointment - reports
Danny Cowley is set to be unveiled as Pompey boss until the end of the season, according to The Portsmouth News,
The former Huddersfield and Lincoln manager yesterday informed Mark Catlin he would be willing to take on the role for the remaining 12 games.
That short-term offer had put off other targets, including Daniel Stendel and Neil Harris, who would have considered a longer deal.
However, Cowley is backing himself to reinvigorate the Blues during the remaining few months of the campaign.
