The Black Cats couldn’t quite get over the line against Michael Appleton’s Lincoln City at the Stadium of Light in front of 10,000 supporters.

Sunderland managed to level the aggregate scores at 2-2 with two first-half goals but a second-half Lincoln strike cemented the Imps’ place in the final at Wembley Stadium.

That means Sunderland will play in League One for a fourth season and leaves the Black Cats with a major task on their hands with most of the current playing squad out of contract at the end of the season.

Henderson and Pickford in England’s provisional Euro 2020 squad

Former Sunderland duo Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford have been included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2020.

Southgate has picked 33 players but will have to cut that down to 26 before this summer’s tournament.

Liverpool captain Henderson, 30, hasn’t played a competitive match since February due to a groin injury but is expected to be fit for the tournament.

Everton keeper Pickford, 27, has been the Toffees No 1 stopper since leaving Sunderland in 2017 and has made 31 Premier League appearances this term.

Who shone and who struggled for Sunderland this season?

The level of performance he reached at centre-back was absurd, really, given that is such a specialist role and not one he had played before. When he played alongside Sanderson it was arguably the most convincing partnership of the campaign. He’ll be better for it as a player, and the hope is that it will be as an impactful central midfielder at Sunderland.
