Pre-season plans are continuing to be finalised at the Academy of Light

The Black Cats have currently confirmed just two friendlies, with visits to Spennymoor Town and York City pencilled in for July 3 and July 21.

But discussions are ongoing about a number of additional games, while Johnson has also discussed the prospect of a trip to Scotland.

That visit could allow Sunderland to face Ross County in a friendly, with the arrangement of such a game part of the deal that brought Ross Stewart to Wearside in January.

Johnson, though, is keen to have a clearly structured pre-season.

Sunderland’s potential opponents will likely be selected with specific focuses in mind, and to enable the side to build upon what the focus of the prior week has been.

Sunderland ‘closing in’ on transfer breakthrough

Sunderland are close to securing a move for goalkeeper Jacob Carney - according to the Sun.

The Manchester United stopper is set to be available on a free transfer as his contract at Old Trafford comes to an end.

Sunderland allowed Remi Matthews to depart the Stadium of Light this summer leaving just Lee Burge and Anthony Patterson as senior goalkeepers.

Both Premier League Burnley and Brighton were also potentially interested in making a move for Carney this summer - but according to the latest report, Sunderland now look to have won the race for his signature.

Carney looks set to form part of the club’s under-23 side.

St Johnstone boss opens the door for Guy Melamed move

St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson has confirmed that the Scottish side are ‘moving on’ from Guy Melamed - opening the door for a potential move to Sunderland.

The Black Cats are one of a number of clubs to have been linked with the Israeli striker, who is now a free agent.

Speaking to The Courier, he said:

I think Guy was waiting to see what options were available to him.

We put an offer to him. It was a ‘wait and see’ but we haven’t heard anything back.

We’ve got to move on from that as well.

We made him a really good offer and it was a while ago now – well before the season finished.

Four bids for Sunderland-linked striker

Sunderland were one of a host of clubs linked with a move for Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley in January.

The towering frontman eventually joined Charlton Athletic on loan and went on to net eight times during his time at The Valley.

Stockley is set to leave Preston permanently this summer and the Lancashire Evening Post claim that four League One clubs have already lodged bids for the former Exeter man.

Portsmouth are believed to be leading the chase, while Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday have also registered an interest.
