Goalkeeper hunt latest

Bolstering his goalkeeping department remains a key priority for Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson, with Remi Matthews still very much on the club’s radar.

Sunderland had been competing with Ipswich Town for the former Bolton keeper but their League One rivals are closing in on the signing of David Cornell.

Matthews is a free agent having left Bolton Wanderers, he was signed there by now-Sunderland boss Parkinson.

The 26-year-old, who has been on several loan spells during his career, is a product of the Norwich City academy.

Parkinson hopes to sign up to five more players before the October deadline, with the new League One season getting underway September 12.

Sunderland face competition

Sunderland and Newcastle United will once again be kept apart in the group stage of the EFL Trophy, writes Mark Donnelly.

However, the duo could face each other in the latter stages of the competition - as they did in the 2018/19 season.

The Black Cats are preparing to enter the competition – previously known as the Checkatrade Trophy and Trophy - for the third successive season.

Under Jack Ross, the club reached the final in 2019 before exiting the competition at the group stage last season.

And with the 2020/21 edition of the competition set to begin on September 8, the draw for the group stage will be made on Tuesday, August 18 at 1:30pm.

Sunderland could draw any of the Northern sides in the competition, including one of the invited academy teams from the Premier League and Championship.

Carabao Cup draw details

The draw for the opening round of the Carabao Cup will take place at 10am on Tuesday morning and will be shown live on Sky Sports News.

Sunderland's season is set to start with the first round of the cup competition on the weekend of Saturday September 5.

The first round will be unseeded but will be divided into a northern and southern sections as per the last two seasons.

Premier League clubs enter the competition in round two, or round three if they are in European competition.
