Meanwhile, Sunderland have suffered another defensive injury blow, with Tom Flanagan subbed after picking up a knock in the Papa John’s Trophy final.

Flanagan needed to come off with a couple of minutes to go before half-time. The centre-back was getting treatment to his left leg, it appeared to be his calf.

Lee Burge - Made a could of excellent clearances as Tranmere looked to find a way through, and did well to keep out Lloyd's deflected effort. 7

Max Power - Has got forward well but Tranmere are having a lot of joy on their left through the lively Lloyd and Feeney. 6

Tom Flanagan - A blow for Sunderland that the centre back had to come off after a solid if unspectacular opening. 6

Luke O'Nien - Has made a couple of timely interventions. 6

Callum McFadzean - Took a heavy knock but hasn't made much of an impact. 5

Josh Scowen - Yet to really get the side ticking and hasn't shown the legs required. 5

Grant Leadbitter - Steady away in the middle, as ever. 6

Lynden Gooch - One good ball through to Maguire but little impact otherwise. 5

Chris Maguire - Has had Sunderland's best chances but yet to produce any moments of real quality. 6
