Goals from Jordan Jones and Grant Leadbitter weren’t quite enough for the Black Cats, who led twice during the contest.
But who were the star performers, and who has work to do?
Our chief football writer Phil Smith has dished out his marks from the match – scroll down and flick through the pages of our picture gallery to see how each player fared:
5. Callum McFadzean
Couldn’t contain Wilks at any stage. Didn't get enough support but both goals came from crosses too easily delivered from that flank. Has to be time for a change in this position. 3 Photo: FRANK REID 2019
6. Josh Scowen
Superb through the first half and looked liberated by the extra man in midfield, constantly harrying the opposition. Made one stunning second half block but was less effective as his team were pushed further and further back. 7 Photo: FRANK REID 2019
7. Grant Leadbitter
Tidied up well through the first half and took a superb penalty to put his side back ahead after a lengthy delay as Hull protested. A good performance in front of the back four. 7 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
8. Carl Winchester
Still has moments where he could be a little bolder in his decisions on the ball, but pressed well and tidy enough. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
