It has left the fans with a bleak - or perhaps less stressful - build-up to Christmas, with the Black Cats' next match coming on the 29th December against Accrington Stanley.

After the news surrounding Sunderland's outbreak, it was revealed that Peterborough, Ipswich and Portsmouth have all recorded COVID-19 cases - leaving the League One season in turmoil.

With the rapid infection rates increasing in League One clubs, will we see the end of an unpredictable season?

Sunderland's Stadium of Light.Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

That answer may come in time but what can be known is that as the season continues to progress, more fatigue will kick in as the schedule becomes even more compact.

The long-term impacts of COVID-19 in the football world has already been established, with the Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce, outlining the impact on some of his players.

Two of his players are still suffering from symptoms such as chronic fatigue, and if more and more players begin to suffer from the outbreak, then the competitive nature of football will be removed entirely.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, Oxford United manager Karl Robinson called for greater sanctions if clubs have broken the COVID-19 protocol.

More clarity is needed from the EFL bosses though over possible repercussions.

So, as we cross over into 2021, hopefully League One football will be able to continue, and with fans inside the stadiums.
